What Are Arabic 7 Spices (Bokharat)?

Updated: Jun 20

The famous seven-spice mixture is the flavor behind many popular Middle Eastern and Mediterranean beef, lamb, and chicken recipes. Also known as “Baharat,” this finely crafted combination of spices go perfectly with a variety of Middle Eastern dishes. It’s common to see a slight range of differences from each spice mix brand as it differs based on the region it’s made or inspired from, but in general, baharat is made by combining black pepper, paprika, sumac, coriander, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, cumin, thyme, mint and cloves.

There are a lot of seven-spice variations. For example, in the southern Middle Eastern regions, black pepper, cinnamon, cumin, turmeric, cardamom, nutmeg, saffron, ginger and cloves are used more, while coriander, mint and thyme are dominant in Turkish cuisine. Scroll down to see our recommended seven spice brands.

In Tunisia, seven-spices refer to a simple mixture of dried rosebuds and ground cinnamon, often combined with black pepper. The Moroccan seven-spice consists of black pepper, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, clove, and nutmeg. As you can see, there are many variations!
